The KKK were the first to have a border patrol.

There is enough material here for any thinking person with an open mind to realize there are tenuous links at the very least, and the strong possibility of much strong links between the minutemen, et. al and the KKK. 

Fair and balanced – the KKK’s view.

The entire anti-immigration movement has its roots in the post WWI KKK.  This poster is fascinating, published in 1924.   

In a recent NPR piece by Adam Burke, the residents of  Olathe, CO expressed outrage at the KKK anti-immigration activities there.

Several people were arrested while protesting a KKK anti-illegal immigration rally Saturday afternoon at the Midland County Courthouse. Before the Klan even arrived, police and portions of the crowd physically collided … About 25 members or supporters of a San Angelo-based KKK group stood in front of the courthouse and were met with a vocal crowd of more than 300. [...] Steven Edwards, the leader of the Empire Knights of the Ku Klux Klan of Texas, said he is racist, but that racism means a love of one’s own race, not hatred for another. The Klan chose Midland as the location for their rally, Edwards said, because it’s the home of President George W. Bush. He said he hopes Bush hears about the event. “A wall or a fence should be put up around the country,” he said. Big Spring’s Mike Peterson, founder of Ameriskins, was one of the Klan’s supporters standing by their side. “America needs to take care of Americans first. This country was made by white Europeans for white Europeans…”

Thanks to the ADL we know the fall schedule for some of these groups.

To understand the role the KKK has played in the whole anti-immigration scene, one must delve through their ‘interesting’ history.  We also need to face that fact that the first real, restrictive anti-immigration laws were passed after being promoted by the KKK in the 1920’s.  Up until that time, some 2.5 million people from Mexico freely moved across our borders for seasonal work.  One could even make the case that these restrictions helped to increase the poverty level in Mexico, just as they will, again.

I know our dear RINOconservative pundits and celebs refuse to believe the KKK is involved in the whole anti-immigration thing, but check this out and you may find it isn’t an isolated case. Why is it the only people who don’t believe there are serious problems within the anti-immigration organizations and their ties to unsavory characters are our RINOconservatives? From the Dem Blog for Arizona…

In the heyday of the KKK, for example, when it was at the appogee of its influence and membership, Stetson Kennedy documented how KKK leaders used the organization to bilk rank and file members, and enrich themselves. Too bad our conservative friends don’t realize that the SPLC can be trusted.  If so, they would have their eyes opened.    Or this would offer some insight into the background of the people promoting anti-immigration.

Are they minutemen, et. al or KKK?

After all the fun with Randy Graf and David Duke yesterday at the Pink Flamingo, I thought it was time to do an update on the anti-immigration scene in Arizona.  As of noon on Sunday, the Duke link was still up and running, even though Graf has appealed to have it removed. (From AZ Central.com)   It is a tremendous amount of reading.  But, some of the best work on the anti-immigration scene can be found here at the Subway Canaries, over at The Pink Flamingo, and over at The Pondering American.

“…Republican Randy Graf shot back at the Arizona Democratic Party today for trying to link him to notorious White supremacist David Duke.

From the Graf campaign:

The Democratic Party released a press release on September 20, suggesting that Graf “sever his ties” with KKK leader David Duke. Randy Graf does not know Duke, has zero ties to Duke, and abhors David Duke and the things for which he stands. Graf deplores this sleazy attempt by the state Democrats to To associate him with Duke. It appears that the racist and anti-Semitic Duke has placed part of an article from U.S. News & World Report on his web blog, about Randy’s victory in the September 12 Arizona Republican primary and with a link to the article and the Graf campaign website. It would be as absurd to claim that U.S. News has ties to Duke as it is that Randy has ties to him. Graf campaign manager RT Gregg stated: “The Graf for Congress campaign knows of no way to monitor nor does the campaign have the resources to monitor which individuals or groups link their websites to any other websites.”

The Graf campaign also criticized the Arizona Democratic Party for linking to Duke’s Web site, which Gregg says give Duke “attention for his warped cause….”

To fully understand where all this is going and the fact that maybe the whole anti-immigration platform promoted by Tancredo may be on the verge of blowing up in Tancredo’s face, one must understand what is going on with the whole anti-immigration scene in Arizona and the past history.  I must warn you, it is not a pretty one.

Let’s deal with the whole minuteman,et.al. problem now.  There is a tremendous amount of material about it, and none of it covered better than the Pondering American. (Just ignore the football obsession, with the PA from LA.  His archive of research into the financing of the minutemen, et. al. and Chris Simcox can be found here at the Subway Canaries.

The problems seem to have begun several years ago when certain elements in Arizona decided to keep Arizona safe for Arizonans.  They used the model created by Barbara Coe in CA (that basically destroyed the GOP’s electoral chances in the state). (From a previous Subway Canaries expose):  Barbara Coe is the most visible of the tawdry little group who could teach the ladies of Wisteria Lane a thing or two.  She is associated with the Cof CC and is a close, personal friend of Jim Gilchrist.  She doesn’t like Hispanics and once referred to them as savages. ‘Two months later, in a speech to the California Coalition on Immigration Reform, a hate group whose leader, Barbara Coe,routinely refers to Mexicans as “savages,” Simcox offered a dire warning to his audience.‘.  She’s also the chair of the California Coalition for Immigration Reform.  She periodically contributes to Vdare (an extremely racist web-based publication that is rapidly becoming mainstream).

And so, Protect Arizona Now (PAN) was born. 

Randy Graf, as mentioned by the panned AZ Dem press release mentioned above is mentioned in a VDARE piece in 2004. 

“…Jacoby interviewed Randy Graf, Congressional candidate and PAN advocate. Graf is well qualified to speak about the urgency of passing the PAN initiative in November. But, although Jacoby’s interview took place two days before the LA Times printed her column, she quoted nothing of what he told her….”

An Arizona Conservative news release also links Graf to PAN in 2004:

“…Bay Buchanan said, “There is a security threat here, jobs are on the line and there is a cultural aspect here. It is imperative that this initiative pass. We cannot wait for the officials to wake up. They are gone, and we can’t count on them. Reach out to others to join in this cause. It is incumbent on us to become involved. And Randy Graf must be elected … and others like him. He is going up against the establishment and the press.” Graf is a state representative opposing Kolbe in the District 8 Republican primary Sept. 7. …”

To get an accurate background into what started the whole anti-immigration movement, you need to start with this same press release, which puts all the leading characters into their places.  And, once again, we come  up with the same cast:  Tom Tancredo, Pat Buchanan, Bay Buchanan, and their total hatred of George W. Bush.  To understand Tancredo’s hatred, you must go back to his feud with Karl Rove.

“…On Thursday evening, the eyes of America focused on Arizona, ground zero in the border invasion that tears at the fabric of the nation. Lawmakers and immigration experts came to Phoenix to encourage volunteers to do everything possible to succeed in getting the Protect Arizona Now (PAN) initiative qualified for the fall ballot.

PAN aims to require proof of citizenship to register to vote, photo I.D. when voting and proof of eligibility to receive non-federal mandated public benefits. By June 30^th, PAN must submit 122,000 valid signatures to the Arizona Secretary of State’s office in order to get it placed on the official voting ballot for the November election. Recently, the signature tally was over 60,000.

One by one, a high-profile parade of speakers strode to the podium to implore Arizonans to make PAN succeed. The only person absent was PAN director Kathy McKee, who is feuding with fellow initiative leaders and is mistrustful of FAIR.

Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo, the foremost federal lawmaker in fighting the border invasion, flew in to rouse the PAN troops. So did Bay Buchanan, the sister of Pat Buchanan and director of Team America, Los Angeles talk show host Terry Anderson and several members of the Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform (FAIR). Based in Washington, D.C., FAIR is spending $100,000 to pay people to gather the necessary signatures. FAIR sponsored Thursday’s rally.

Tancredo said, “I love Arizona and will come to Arizona at the drop of a hat. The task you have ahead of you is a difficult one. Some good things are happening. You can tell momentum is shifting in this country. Little things are happening.”

The congressman said that President Bush ignited a firestorm of protest in  January when he introduced a Temporary Worker Program.

“That prompted a response I’ve never seen,” Tancredo said, “1,000 calls to my office in four hours, 99.999 percent of which were negative. People were saying, ‘I’ve been a Republican all my life and I’m not going to vote for him (President Bush).’”

Pat Buchanan said last week that the president has abandoned that plan.

However, at a Republican congressional retreat in Philadelphia two weeks after the Bush announcement, Tancredo felt that immigration reform would surely be placed on the agenda.

“It’s the one thing people agree on,” Tancredo said. “People by the throngs say, ‘yes, secure the borders!’ We have two problems to get anything accomplished: the Democratic Party – it’s a source of votes. On the other side we’ve got the Republican Party, which sees a source of cheap labor. These two power brokers are tough to beat. Karl Rove (senior adviser to Bush) and the White House people were at the retreat. At the end of the second day, I went up to speak. There were 30 members in line. Every person who spoke said, ‘this immigration thing … is he (Bush) crazy? Tell him to knock it off!’ …”

PAN was founded by Kathy McKee.  McKee eventually brought Virginia Abernathy in to help with the growing organization.  Then the problems began.  Abernathy has close ties to the KKK and various other white supremacist organizations.   One of the important articles needed to explain who McKee is has been pulled, like many of the other KKK articles.  There is consensus among most that there is an immense problem … Kathy McKee, an anti-immigration activist said about these centers, … Kathy McKee was able to get the support of FAIR, Federation for American Immigration .www.kkk.bz/there_is_consensus_among_most_th.htm – 71k – Cached – Similar pages)  It is too bad, because this wonderful little piece is no longer available for public consumption

“One immigration reform website had this to say: ?It is our hope that the stench of McKee and Abernathy will not waft over those decent and well-meaning citizens who have labored hard and long for the true purpose of Prop 200…That she should engage a known radical ?separatist?, which is synonymous with racist and white supremacist, in any capacity is no surprise to those of us who have known of her narcissistic nature since first contact over a year ago.?The remarks made about Abernathy and McKee are inexcusable and are symptomatic of the problem with so many in the different umbrellas of the ?conservative? movement. They want a clean white Christian nation (even if they don?t admit it) but they want to keep their reputation also. ..SHAME!”

From the Jewish News of Greater Phoenix…”The Center for New Community, an anti-bigotry group based in Chicago, has criticized Abernethy for her leadership roles in other extremist efforts, such as the Occidental Quarterly, a publication that declares that immigration into the United States should be limited to “selected people of European ancestry.” Pan’sointment of Abernathy, the center says, should make us all question the group’s real motives.

In her defense of Abernethy, PAN founder and chairwoman Kathy McKee jumped on the Center for New Community, questioning its legitimacy and comparing it to The Southern Poverty Law Center, which she branded “a hate group.” The SP LCcourse, devotes itself to promoting tolerance and counteracting hate. McKee, like Abernethy, has an agenda so far to the right as to be off the page.

In related news, even farther off the page, the ADL last month confirmed that a self-admitted neo-Nazi is leading a push to recruit armed volunteers for a new “Arizona Guard” militia to patrol the Arizona/Mexico border from a compound near Douglas. ADL Regional Director Bill Straus said the news validates the ADL’s warnings that “extreme anti-immigrant groups … have historically attracted white supremacist and other extremist support.”

Even some of PAN’s legislative supporters, such as state Rep. Russell Pearce, (R-Mesa), are distancing themselves from PAN now that Abernathy is in the picture. Pearce told the Tribune through an assistant that he no longer works with Protect Arizona Now. But he still supports the initiative. Let’s hope the rest of us know better…”

“Virginia Abernathy “Last year, Virginia Abernethy, a professor emeritus at Vanderbilt’s medical school and leader of the Tanton-influenced Population-Environment Balance, became the latest in the Tanton network to join the Citizens Informer editorial board.
“My view of the Council of Conservative Citizens,” she told the Intelligence Report, “is that they support traditional values and the freedom of people to associate with people that they want to associate with.” She spoke on the same day that the CCC’s website carried a comparison of black pop singer Michael Jackson and an ape a comparison that Abernethy suggested may have reflected “bad taste,” but not racism. “What is the point of a society that pushes [racial] mixing?” she asked when told of another CCC web item that derided the wife of murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl as a “mixed race” woman who is “committed to racial and ethnic amalgamation.” “Our society pushes mixing,” the retired Vanderbilt professor added. “I think this is probably not a good thing for the society.”  The Cafe Press“

A much publicized KlanKat fight basically destroyed PAN and alienated their ’sugar daddy’ Randy Childress.  From Arizona IndyMedia.

 “…PAN Treasurer Rusty Childress, owner of Childress Auto Mall in Phoenix, agrees that we need to protect the United States from immigrants because “we need to be careful that we don’t become the third world country that a lot of these illegal aliens are running from.” (Horizonte, KAET TV, Dec. 18, 2003)…”

 But, not to worry, Childress turned his attention from PAN to that absolutely idiot Michelle Dallacroce and her equally hystarical Mother’s Against Illegal Immigration.  The SPLC has already put her in one ot its reports.

“…Well, I’m protesting you,” the anarchist called back. “If anybody gave you an order to torture an Iraqi, you know you’d follow it like a good little fascist.” Back at the Minuteman mini-rally, Mothers Against Illegal Immigration founder Michelle Dallacroce warned of Mexicans taking over America by “outbreeding our mothers.” Gilchrist’s towering, pony-tailed bodyguard shoved a news photographer who got too close. Meanwhile, a group of high-school boys in business suits with National Young Leaders Conference name tags made their way over to the neo-Nazis, where they stood next to Bill White and sieg-heiled while their giggling girlfriends snapped souvenir photos….”  

Spencer now runs the American Patrol Report.  Spencer is such a great humanist, you are going to want to check his page on “Mexican Family Values“.

This lead to the arrival of Glenn Spencer.  I like to use the Aztlan article against him.  (Just desserts).  Spencer was working with Coe in CA.  Then things got a little too hot for him, so he packed up and moved to Sierra Vista in Cochise County, same county as Chris Simcox, only Simcox went to Tombstone.  (FYI – I’m not even getting into the whole Simcox thing in this epxose.  I’ve provided enough links up by the Pondereing American). 

“…Glenn Spencer’s history of anti-Mexican bigotry began in Los Angeles when he founded, along with a group of Jews, an organization called Voices of Citizen’s Together (VCT) approximately 5 years ago. Many of the members of VCT were Jews who were also members of the now defunct Jewish Defense League (JDL). Glenn Spencer himself bragged that he was a card carrying member of the JDL on his website and that his two daughters were married to Jews. One of Glenn Spencer’s staunchest supporters in Los Angeles is the notorious Mexican hating Jew Hal Netkin. Soon after Irv Rubin of the JDL was arrested for terrorism and assassinated in federal prison, Glenn Spencer ceased to brag about his membership in the JDL.

When things got hot for Spencer in Los Angeles he, like the Tombstone Vigilante Chris Simcox, headed for the Arizona desert to join up with the infamous Arizona rancher Roger Barnett and his posse of white anti-immigrant bigots. Roger Barnett for a while was featured in the US national media for advocating the organized “hunting” of “illegal Mexicans” that crossed the Mexico/Arizona border. Barnett boasted to the media that he had arrested thousands of “illegal Mexicans” and was often featured in photographs porting an M-16 assault rifle with a hunting scope.

Glenn Spencer and Roger Barnett teamed up and in the year 2000 they organized an anti-Mexican conference in Sierra Vista, Arizona. They issued a flyer inviting militias, white supremacist groups and the KKK to come to Arizona for “some fun in the sun”. The meaning was clear! They were inviting white violent bigots to come to Arizona to have fun “hunting for Mexicans”. The conference took place at the Windemere Hotel in Sierra Vista, Arizona on Saturday May 13, 2000. Among some of the proposals discussed at the conference was “the placement of military style land mines along the desert pathways used by Mexican undocumented workers”. Soon after the conference, numerous bodies of murdered Mexican migrant workers turned up in desolate areas of the Arizona desert.

The arrest of Glenn Spencer on Saturday is no surprise to those who are monitoring his increasingly bizarre behavior. Spencer, like the Tombstone vigilante Chris Simcox, has been exhibiting classic paranoiac schizophrenic symptoms recently. Just 5 days before his shooting rampage in Sierra Vista, Spencer wrote and published in his website a strange personal letter title “WHITE FIGHT OR FLIGHT” in which he warns, “white Americans, should get out of California — now, before it is too late to salvage the equity they have in their homes and the value of their businesses.” The reason Spencer gives for the warning is that the Mexicans have taken over California. It is very clear now why Spencer left the Los Angeles area to live in Sierra Vista, Arizona. In his letter he expresses the belief that he is a “white exile” forced to leave the Golden State. …”

The SPLC did an excellent expose on Spencer.

“…Spencer got involved in the anti-immigration movement in 1992, when he formed Voice of Citizens Together, also known as American Patrol, in California. In 2002, saying the battle was lost in that state, he moved to the “front lines” of the Arizona border, where he formed American Border Patrol. He was one of the first to call for border citizens’ patrols and pioneered the use of surveillance technology.

He also was one of the first well-known anti-immigration activists to more or less openly court white supremacists and anti-Semites. He has attended conferences of American Renaissance magazine, which specializes in racist theories about blacks and others. He interviewed the magazine’s editor, Jared Taylor, on his syndicated radio show. Another guest was California State Professor Kevin MacDonald, who is the architect of an elaborate anti-Semitic theory dressed up as evolutionary biology.

Just this September, Spencer promoted on his Web site a booklet published by Taylor called The Color of Crime. The booklet is a “relentlessly factual” study that alleges that blacks and Hispanics are far more likely than whites to be criminals. It also falsely alleges people of color commit vastly more hate crimes than others… “

The ADL says immigration groups in AZ have some interesting ties.

“…While Spencer tries to downplay his extremist message by claiming that he is not a racist, racist and anti-government extremist groups across the country have embraced his rhetoric; indeed, Spencer has personally appeared at events sponsored by white supremacists and racists. ..”

Ironically, I don’t think it is a coincidence that many of these organizations are headquartered or center in and around Cochise County, home of Tombstone and the ghosts of the Cowboys.  Maybe the frontier ideal attracts individualists.  There is a very definate alure in Tombstone, which is one of my very favorite places.  The anti-bunch is having a huge rally there in a couple of weeks.

The most vivid example, however, of the way the closed-borders nativists interact with neo-Nazis was provided in the recent SPLC report examining the activities of Laine Lawless. She was a onetime Minuteman who started up her own border-watch group, and was found to have secretly sent an e-mail to an Ohio leader of the National Socialist Movement named Mark Martin (who was deeply involved in the Toledo riots, and whose image you can see here and here) that outlined a plan of attack for white supremacists to deal with illegal immigrants:

– “Steal the money from any illegal walking into a bank or check cashing place.”

– “Make every illegal alien feel the heat of being a person without status. … I hear the rednecks in the South are beating up illegals as the textile mills have closed. Use your imagination.”

– “Discourage Spanish-speaking children from going to school. Be creative.”

– “Create an anonymous propaganda campaign warning that any further illegal immigrants will be shot, maimed or seriously messed-up upon crossing the border. This should be fairly easy to do, considering the hysteria of the Spanish language press, and how they view the Minutemen as ‘racists & vigilantes.’ “

This is one of her more ‘reasonable’ pieces…” On the Front Lines…On Thursday, January 15, 2004, I went to a Town Hall meeting held by Rep. Jim Kolbe -R, to meet with his constituents and discuss our concerns. It was held in the Sierra Vista Town Council Chambers, and there were plenty of police on hand to protect Mr. Kolbe from his constituents…..There was so much anger in the room, I could feel the tension-the people there were ready to explode. One issue was on their minds-border control and the hordes of illegal “immigrants” that invade SE Arizona on a daily basis. Those who don’t live here don’t understand this battle that we are fighting, and how important private property rights are to those landowners whose sovereignty is daily disregarded by illegals entering from Mexico….Once inside the Council Chambers, I looked at the sea of angry faces. A majority of them were over 50 years of age, and they were angry-not about Medicare, but about border control, or as I put it, border uncontrol. The meeting wasn’t as raucous as I was used to when the protestors were left-wingers, but Kolbe’s remarks were punctuated by uncomfortable questions regarding WHEN the U.S. is planning to control the border, and by cries of “Hear, hear!” as one of the attendees said something the others liked. This was primarily an older group, and pretty well mannered, considering the hostility they felt toward Kolbe….”  After reading this you would think she ewas the most reasonable person around.

But….the most fun – the most absolute fun is what Laine Lawless did in her other life!  She was a Xena groopie, hitting the scifi scene. (Once upon a time I would try and deal with artists on the scene, and push the space program, but gave up on these people.  They are just plain wierd!) This comes from one of her ‘Fan’ sites!

“^[01] This year’s Northern California Hercules/Xena Fest was held in beautiful San Pablo, California, on July 26, 1997, and was hosted by Fan Tao. The site selected was the Montara Bay Community Center. The choice of location was ideal as it afforded a great amount of seclusion and freedom to move about without disturbing other patrons, a danger that sometimes happens in restaurant settings. We had access to a full kitchen, restrooms, and tables and chairs. Proving to be a well-prepared host, Fan brought along his extensive T.V. and stereo equipment, and ‘fest participants were treated to some favorite Xena episodes on a big screen T.V. with stereo sound.

^[02] The festivities kicked off with a viewing of a bloopers tape from my personal Xena Fan club kit, and then there were introductions all around. There were a total of 17 participants and after a brief poll, it was sadly discovered that there were no representatives from the Hercules camp.

^[03] Next, we decided to have lunch, and our host supplied everyone with Carl’s Jr meals and a toy from the Hercules/Xena animated movie, and of course, we all had to lose ourselves in our new toys. So little flying disks filled the air and we all chatted and got to know each other.

^[04] After lunch, the games began! The competition was fierce due to the fact that there were prizes to be won. Everyone got the opportunity to win a Xena II doll by playing a throw the Chakram game. Each person got 2 chances to throw the Chakram (not the real one, of course, but a nice Frisbee rendition) and knock over Disney’s version of Hercules. I personally took great pleasure in hitting that little rip-off. Laine Lawless was kind enough to give everyone whip cracking lessons, and then came the group photos.

^[05] The charity auction was next, and $384 was raised for the Children’s Book Press, a non-profit organization that publishes children’s books about different cultures and customs. Fan, our host, read to us a book about a Chinese girl who grew up to become a general in the Army in order to pay her Father’s debts since he did not have a son. The highest bids were for 2 plaques donated by Powerstar. The plaques were still photos, mounted for display and numbered, of Xena and Gabrielle from A DAY IN THE LIFE (#39) and one of Xena. Fan also donated an autographed still of Hudson Leick as our favorite villainess, Callisto. From St. Louis Today“Laine Lawless, 54, also came to Cochise County from California. She arrived six months ago from the San Francisco Bay area in search of a gun-friendlier state and a respite from liberal politics.  “If you’re not a socialist, your name is poop there,” said Lawless, who plastered her truck with bumper stickers (“I Support Our Border Patrol” and “Cowgirls: How the West was Won”) and joined the Civil Homeland Defense Corps after finding it on the Internet.
Wearing a bulletproof vest, a Browning 9 mm semi-automatic and a belt buckle that reads “Nobody Raped a .38,” Lawless has found her niche in the desert. Her companions on patrol one night in early April included Carmen Mercer, 49, a German immigrant who owns the OK Cafe in Tombstone, and John Stathas, 73, who makes the 94-mile trip to the border from his Tucson home by motorcycle.”

Its director, Laine Lawless, disputes the center’s report last month that she has encouraged neo-Nazi groups to threaten and to steal money from illegal immigrants. In an interview, Lawless said her group supports only “lawful actions.” Lawless said she gets “contacted by all sorts of groups” and that “some of them are Nazis,” but she said she does not recruit neo-Nazis. Lawless went on to describe the most vocal organizers of last month’s immigrants’ rights marches as militant “brown Nazis” whose activities threaten to ignite a “civil war” in America.The building tension over illegal immigration’s impact on America comes at a time when the FBI says that the number of hate-crime victims in 2004 — the last year for which figures are available — was 9,528, up nearly 5% from 2003.”

And from the ADL comes the following:  “…Perhaps most strikingly, Arizona anti-immigration activist Laine Lawless, who has been associated with several border vigilante groups and eventually started the group Border Guardians in 2005, sent an e-mail in April to a prominent Ohio member of the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement, Mark Martin, asking him to pass its contents on to his white supremacist contacts.  Martin did so, forwarding the message to several white supremacist forums on Yahoo and Usenet in early April, but unfortunately for Lawless, Martin ignored the part of her message which read, “Please don’t use my name,” and instead forwarded the message in full.Lawless’s e-mail, titled, “How to GET RID OF THEM,” urged a variety of intimidating, harassing, and even illegal and violent tactics to intimidate immigrants into leaving the U.S., including cutting down the broadcast tower for a Spanish language radio station near Phoenix and stealing money from illegal aliens.  “I hear the rednecks in the South are beating up illegals as the textile mills have closed,” she wrote.  “Use your imagination.”  Lawless’s suggestions were consistent with previous statements she had made, including a late March posting to an anti-immigration Internet forum in which she wrote that “my Southern friend tells me the rednecks in the South just beat [illegal aliens] up.  Unfortunately, there are too many of them to use that tactic there any more.”   Earlier, in February, Lawless posted to a Texas Minuteman message forum that “We need borders to…preserve our culture, instead of accepting any kind of flotsam and jetsam that seeks to float into our territory.”  Mark Martin himself seemed willing to personally engage in intimidating tactics.  In early May, he admitted in a Google Internet forum that he and another member of the National Socialist Movement had passed out racist fliers in Covington, Ohio, at houses “surrounding a suspected illegal Mexican jobsite.”  The two neo-Nazis also approached workers at the jobsite and demanded to see identification from them.  When workers refused, Martin allegedly told one of them that he “was an illegal, wetback who was stealing American jobs and…spreading disease.”  Workers called the police, who told the neo-Nazis to leave or be charged with harassment…”

A P. S. to this article – The Pondering American has been researching William Greene (who is promoting Simcox) and Right March.  After you read the piece about Simcox, you need to read his.  It puts things into perspective and shows us how badly we are being scammed.

The Pink Flamingo has been covering Chris Simcox and the misc. minutemen,et al…for some time. The Simcox-Keyes Scam; and the Minuteman Feeding Frenzy.

Once upon a time Simcox was something of a ‘joke’. “…The Rev. Robert Carney is a former St. Louis resident who left town to enter the priesthood at 43. For years, he served in parishes along the Arizona border. Today, he runs a binational, interfaith group to promote understanding about the reasons migrants make the illegal trek. Some of the armed groups are more worrisome to him than others. “I don’t think we’re overly concerned with Chris Simcox. He is not recognized by any of the other vigilante groups. They kind of laugh at him, really. But there are others who are very dangerous people that we’ve been concerned about from the beginning,” he said. Carney said Ranch Rescue didn’t have great numbers. “But we have people who have gone in to see their weaponry and have been frightened by what they saw there...”

“I dare the president of the United States to arrest Americans who are protecting their own country,” Simcox said, in comments carried by the Washington Times earlier this year. “We will no longer tolerate the ineptness of the government in dealing with these criminals and drug dealers. It is a monumental disgrace that our government is letting the American people down, turning us into the expendable casualties of the war on terrorism.” Salon article by Max Blumenthal.

The ego Simcox nurishes is revealed in this press release from the new defunct Civil Homeland Defense organizatoin. A message from Simcox to the world.  “From: Chris Simcox — Civil Homeland Defense 

CHD received information yesterday morning (Tuesday) that most field Border Patrol agents were being called in to increase security at the port of entry stations. CHD members held an emergency meeting and have decided to fill in for the government and help our friends, neighbors and countrymen, again. Yesterday, I spoke with a Mexican news agency and issued a warning that all illegal entrants attempting to breach our border during a time of war in which National Security is at a critical level would be ignorant and unwise. I stated that all illegal entries would be treated as enemies of the state and will be detained and held in contempt of invading the United States of America.

I have sent this message to Governor Napolitano and to Border Patrol’s Tucson sector headquarters and alerted supervisors that once we enter war with Iraq, CHD will deter, detain and apprehend anyone who attempts to flee a CHD citizen volunteer. All illegal invaders will be detained until Border Patrol agents arrive to transport them back across the border. We will humanely supply them with water, food, blankets and medical attention to the best of our abilities.

Since our government officials have basically notified the world that the border fence is not being patrolled, it is now more important than ever for citizens to rise to the occasion and fill a void in National security.

CHD volunteers will now patrol the border with over 100 fully armed Citizens who consider themselves members of the unorganized state militia; we have the legal right and moral obligation as per our Arizona State Constitution and Federal Constitution and our respect for American citizens.

A message to the world: Do not attempt to cross the border illegally; you will be considered an enemy of the state; if aggressors attempt to forcefully enter our country they will be repelled with force if necessary!

Here is the story that started it all.

This expose gives me no pleasure.  I met Chris several years ago, not long after he took over the helm of the Tombstone Tumbleweed.  He gave my friends and I a break when we needed one.  I appreciate that very much, so when Chris began working on the illegal immigration problems, I paid attention.  I knew the guy, and from my experience found him to be upfront about things.  It bothered me when he began to associate with Jim Gilchrist.  I saw Chris as being manipulated by Gilchrist who immediately came across to me as a snake-oil salesman.  The addition of Gilchrist into the movement brought this disturbing underbelly of ‘hate’.  For several years now I’ve thought something was wrong, but could never put my finger on it.  I watched as Chris appeared to change.  When he and Gilchrist appeared to ’split’ I breathed a sigh of relief ant thought maybe things will be okay.  Unfortunately they are not. 

The problem is, now, I don’t know what the truth is. I know the attitudes of mutual acquaintances.  Some are quite candid, others have been assimilated.  Others handle the issue with kid gloves.  One has told me of the threats he received when he began questioning the whole ‘minuteman thing’.  Another has made several comments about associates of associates.  There is something that seriously bothers me.  I have noticed when I bring the subject up, people change the subject or refuse to answer, or laugh it away as a bunch of crack-pots.  But, deep down, I pick up this aura of fear, not of illegals but of the whole minuteman movement and their associates. 

In the past I have been criticized for what some assume is my jumping to conclusions about the minutemen, their associates, white supremacists, neo-nazis, and other anti-immigration groups.  I wish I were jumping to conclusions.  I wish I could rely on well-researched material from ‘trusted’ conservative sources, but unfortunately many if almost all of these sources have been assimilated.  They are refusing to delve into the issue.  I don’t know if it is because they honestly believe these people are telling the truth or are downright ignoring the questionable associations because they don’t want to admit they exist.  It is possible these people have good intentions, but hell is paved with good intentions. 

Or, and this is the part of it that terrifies me – these people support these questionable sources because they believe in exactly what these sources do, say, and believe.  Lord help us all if this is the case. 

But then, again, a libertarian blogger contacted me about two months ago.  He told me the problem is conservatives are ignoring what The Pink Flamingo was exposing because it is highly embarrassing to them because they’ve been ‘connected’.  Liberals are ignoring it because they are enjoying the predicament the conservatives find themselves in right now.  If this is the case, then conservatives are just as intellectually dishonest as liberals and we’ve all been sold a false bill of goods.

Simcox answers critics, “….There have also been many questions asked as to how I make a living. I am not salaried by MCDC—otherwise, it is no one’s business. I have never felt the need to publicly defend my integrity—above all else: to thine own self be true.

However, in light of the circumstances of malicious attacks, I will, this one last time, reveal personal information to answer the critics.

The hours of toil and sacrifice necessary to run this national organization has taken a toll on my personal life and has led to my shutting down my newspaper—The Tombstone Tumbleweed. My present source of income has been the honorariums and fees received from organizations who request me for speaking engagements. I have also received money from selling my life story for a movie that will soon go into production. Even with those combined sources of income, I have made just enough to keep my head above water. The remainder of my living expenses is covered by my devoted and dedicated wife, who shares my passion for the MCDC mission.

I do foresee a need come the new year for me to request a modest salary to maintain my role as president of MCDC. If the board and national directors do not agree then it will be necessary for me to leave the organization and return to teaching—or I may need to go get a job at Wal-Mart or Home Depot!…”

So just who is Chris Simcox?  The problem with dealing with any ‘normal person who has done nothing to warrent public attention over the years is the difficult time obtaining information about them.  For Simcox, we must rely on ‘opposing’ sources.  The one most often quoted is from the SPLC by Susy Buchanan and David Holthouse.

Threats, Anger and Paranoia
The truth is more complex and troubling. Court records obtained by the Center’s Intelligence Project show Simcox’s second ex-wife, Kim Dunbar, filed an emergency appeal in September 2001 to obtain full custody of their teenage son because she feared that Simcox had suffered a mental breakdown and was dangerous.

Dunbar declined to be interviewed for this article, but her sworn affidavits speak for themselves. In one, Dunbar testified that throughout their 10-year marriage, Simcox was prone to sudden, violent rages.

“He once took a knife from the kitchen and threatened to kill himself,” she testified. “When he was angry, he broke furniture, car windows, he banged his head against the wall repeatedly and punched things.”

Dunbar said that when their son was 4 years old, Simcox slapped him so hard that a mark remained on his face for two days. Another time, she testified, she grabbed her young son in her arms and jumped out a window because Simcox was throwing furniture at them.

After such episodes, she said, Simcox would become despondent. “He would stare at walls, mumbling to himself.” In the affidavits, Dunbar said she repeatedly pressured Simcox to seek professional help and even tried to have him hospitalized. But he persistently refused treatment.

“Eventually,” she said, “the only thing I could do was file for divorce.”

Simcox and Dunbar initially shared custody of their son. There was no legal dispute until shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, when Dunbar suddenly filed a flurry of emergency appeals.

“While Chris has always been prone to strong opinions and ranting behavior, this last episode has gone even farther,” she told the court. “I am convinced he has had some kind of mental lapse and I am now, more than ever, afraid for my son to be in Chris’ care.”

Dunbar grew frightened after Simcox left her a series of bizarre voicemail messages beginning that Sept. 13, in which he went on angry diatribes about the Constitution, patriotism, and impending nuclear attacks on Los Angles, and talked about training their 15-year-old son in the use of firearms. “

“…Wyatt Earp vs. the Chinese
The court ruled in Dunbar’s favor, ending the joint custody arrangement and awarding Dunbar sole custody of their son.

Simcox has said that after leaving Los Angeles he tried to become a Border Patrol agent but was rejected for being too old. After settling in Tombstone, he worked for a while as a gunfight-show actor before purchasing the local newspaper, The Tombstone Tumbleweed.

Simcox initially told followers he had drained his son’s college fund to pay for the paper, but later switched to claiming he had emptied his own retirement account. Simcox used the paper to rail against illegal immigration and to recruit volunteers for Civil Homeland Defense, the outfit he founded in 2002 and described in the Tumbleweed as a “committee of vigilantes.”

In January 2003, while on patrol with Civil Homeland Defense, Simcox was arrested by federal park rangers for illegally carrying a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun in a national park. Also in Simcox’s possession at the time of that arrest, according to police records, were a document entitled “Mission Plan,” a police scanner, two walkie-talkies, and a toy figure of Wyatt Earp on horseback.

Two months later, in a speech to the California Coalition on Immigration Reform, a hate group whose leader, Barbara Coe, routinely refers to Mexicans as “savages,” Simcox offered a dire warning to his audience.

“Take heed of our weapons because we’re going to defend our borders by any means necessary,” he said. “There’s something very fishy going on at the border. The Mexican army is driving American vehicles — but carrying Chinese weapons. I have personally seen what I can only believe to be Chinese troops.”

Of illegal immigrants, Simcox added: “They’re trashing their neighborhoods, refusing to assimilate, standing on street corners, jeering at little girls walking on their way to school.”

Simcox’s big mouth and swaggering manner inspired Tombstone locals and the numerous Simcox detractors within the Minuteman movement to nickname him “The Little Prince.”

Wherever he goes, Simcox seems to establish a reputation for arrogance. After failing as a would-be actor in Los Angeles, he took a job in 1990 teaching at a prestigious private academy, Wildwood School.

In interviews with the Intelligence Report, two of Simcox’s former teaching colleagues at the school describe him as an instructor who was exceptionally popular with students and parents but isolated himself from his fellow teachers with his condescending attitude.

“He always stayed up on the latest trends in childhood development and teaching methods, and he was always talking about himself like he was God’s gift to teaching,” said one teacher who taught at Wildwood at the same time as Simcox.

“He had this real holier-than-thou attitude, like he was so far above the other teachers they should be grateful he was even discussing his methods with them. He was insulting.”

‘A Drastic, Dangerous Guy’
There’s one trend that Simcox seems oblivious to — the growing involvement of racists in the border vigilante movement. Despite the fact that white supremacist groups openly recruit for Minuteman patrols and that a handful of neo-Nazis from the National Alliance and Aryan Nations did sign up for the Minuteman Project in April, Simcox refuses to acknowledge that vigilante border patrols are potentially a magnet for violent racists….”

And this one botheres me more than all the charges of white supremicists, etc.  “…That’s a strange rhetorical device given the accusations leveled at Simcox in the summer of 1998, when his 14-year-old daughter from his first marriage — prior to his union with Dunbar — came to live with him in Los Angeles.

In separate interviews with the Intelligence Report, two of Simcox’s former colleagues at Wildwood and his first ex-wife gave the same account. They said that Simcox helped his daughter get a job babysitting for a Wildwood School employee and that one night, Simcox’s daughter showed up unexpectedly at her employer’s house, visibly upset, alleging that her father had just attempted to sexually molest her.

“He tried to molest our daughter when he was intoxicated,” said Deborah Crews, Simcox’s first ex-wife and the girl’s mother. “When she ran out, he tried to say he was just giving her a leg massage and she got the wrong idea.”

Contacted by the Report, Simcox refused to answer four direct questions about the molestation allegations. “I would never answer those questions to you. You can’t ask those questions,” he said. “You’re on a witch hunt and you’re trying to discredit our movement, which is to secure the borders. … My personal life has nothing to do with anything that goes on here.”

No charges were filed against Simcox, but Crews said she and her daughter immediately broke off all contact with him.

“He’s a drastic, chaotic, very dangerous guy,” said Crews. “I’m surprised he hasn’t shot anybody yet. I see him on TV and I have to turn if off, because it makes me sick to see him getting all this attention.”

Simcox, now 44, recently married for a third time. He met his new wife, 25-year-old documentary filmmaker Alena Lyras when she traveled to Tombstone in April along with hundreds of other journalists to interview Simcox during the Minuteman Project. Simcox organized the massively hyped, month-long vigilante action with current Orange County, Calif., congressional candidate Jim Gilchrist, for whom Simcox says he has been stumping as a paid spokesman.

Simcox and Lyras were married in late August in Maricopa County, Ariz. Simcox sold The Tumbleweed in September and moved in with Lyras at her home in Phoenix. During the “America First” summit, Simcox said that Lyras is “useful to our movement, because she’s young enough that she’s been infiltrating the ACLU and other open borders groups and filming their meetings and protests…”  Now, remember what was reported above, the way Simcox HAD to get rid of the Tumbleweed?  Does this sound like the statement…”...The hours of toil and sacrifice necessary to run this national organization has taken a toll on my personal life and has led to my shutting down my newspaper—The Tombstone Tumbleweed…”  It isn’t quite the same, is it?

Now, check out the Max Bloumenthol version of the story.  “…Simcox, the Tumbleweed’s editor and owner, is in his element. After a failed marriage in Los Angeles, a stint of unemployment, the shock of Sept. 11, and three months camped out in the Arizona desert, he arrived here last year and has fashioned for himself a new life as the poster boy for the American anti-immigrant movement. He bought the newspaper in August; by October, he had clearly stamped it with his own personality. “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!” declared the Tumbleweed’s front page that month. “A PUBLIC CALL TO ARMS! CITIZENS BORDER PATROL MILITIA NOW FORMING!”

Within a month, Simcox claims, an untold number of Tombstone residents and others signed up to join his militia, called Civil Homeland Defense. Militia rules mandate that each member carry a pistol, for which a background check is required, and he or she must also wear a baseball cap emblazoned with an American flag. The group patrols along the Cochise County chaparral between Tombstone and Mexico, searching for people who look like illegal immigrants. When suspected illegals are caught, Simcox says, they are “humanely” placed under citizen’s arrest and turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

There are those in Tombstone who say that the 41-year-old former teacher is an eccentric, an egomaniac and a threat to the local tourism industry. While Simcox says his militia has 600 members, others here say the number is far smaller. “Chris can only get a three-man patrol going,” says Jeff, a bartender at the Crystal Bar on Main Street. “Basically, the kind of people who want to join his group can’t even pass a background check….”

The article continues, bring out the dirty little secret anti-immigration sourced deny…”…In Cochise County alone, self-styled vigilante groups in recent years have harassed and detained hundreds, perhaps thousands, of migrants suspected of entering the country illegally. They claim they are only enforcing U.S. laws too often ignored by law enforcement officials. But human rights advocates are worried about a climate here and through much of southern Arizona that seems increasingly primed for violence.

In 2000 Miguel Angel Palafox, a 20-year-old migrant, was shot in the neck by two horsemen dressed in black who attacked him near the border town of Sasabe, about 50 miles east of Cochise County. Palafox crawled back to Mexico with a T-shirt wrapped around his wound and lived to tell the tale, though the riders remain unknown.

Last October, in the small town of Red Rock, between Tucson and Phoenix, two undocumented immigrants were found shot to death by a roadside. Manuel Ortega, a spokesman for the Mexican Consulate in Tucson, says the two victims were part of a group of 12 migrants resting around a pond south of the town. While most of the group slumbered, one of the migrants told the consulate staff, two masked men dressed in camouflage and armed with machine guns appeared from the woods, firing upon the group and killing the two before the others scattered. The Pinal County sheriff’s office is treating the killings as a dispute between rival people smugglers, or coyotes, but Ortega says his office has never seen a killing like that involving coyotes.

As co-director of the Tucson human rights group Derechos Humanos, attorney Isabel Garcia has campaigned to bring anti-immigrant vigilantes and brutal coyotes to justice for more than 25 years, and she sees good reason to question the focus of the sheriff’s investigation of the Red Rock murders. “It seems highly unlikely that coyotes would use camouflage clothes and highly unlikely that they would kill people who would bring in more money,” she said. “We’ve never seen that.”

No one has suggested that Simcox’s group is involved in the deadly violence. But critics say he is the embodiment of a troubling climate of intolerance and impatience that poses a vivid threat to Mexicans and other illegal migrants near the border. Local officials have condemned the vigilante activity. U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva of Tucson, a Democrat, has called for an investigation of the growing militia movement there…”

“…Were the Red Rock murders were committed by vigilantes? That’s “just speculation,” Ray replied. But don’t Simcox, Barnett and Spencer raise the risk of anti-immigrant violence when they act independent of the law to mete out justice? “The onus is simply on the federal government to regain control of the borders,” Ray said. “If they fail to do that and it goes on year after year, what we’re going to see is increasing numbers of citizens speaking out against out-of-control immigration and defending their property….”

The article continues, with information about the misc. anti-immigration groups, their connection to Tancredo and to Tanton.  What does Simcox think?  “…At the mention of Tancredo’s name, Chris Simcox leaps from his chair and yelps: “That’s my leader! I’d vote for him for president tomorrow!“

What is true and what isn’t? 

Are we dealing with a bunch of very nasty people or are we dealing with patriots – or a mix?

Let’s face it, we’re dealing with individuals who are not firing on all thrusters.  Are they unbalanced or just ego driven?  I’m not a psychologist, so don’t ask me.  But I do know a loose screw when I see one.

From yesterday’s Pink Flamingo: For weeks I have been telling you not all was sweetness and light when it came to Chris Simcox, Minuteman Civil Defense Corps  and all that money he is collecting.  First, how many people know it is not a non-profit organization and their money is not tax-deductable?  And where is it all going?  They are raising hundreds of thousands of dollars and accounting for none of it.  How about no honor among thieves.  Thanks to the Pondering American for this breaking news!  I’ve been telling you Simcox and the funds raised for his projects weren’t quite above reproach.  Now there is proof.  Wonder how the anti-immigration puppets are going to handle it?  Greene has helped to promote this scam.

Incorporated on June 12, 2006 with Simcox as the only member of the board of directors listed.

The Tradenames “Minuteman Project” and “Minuteman HQ” are registered in Arizona to Laine Lawless.

That’s one I haven’t got around to dissecting on this thread, but I can tell you the stuff out there on the internet on her is along the lines of what we’ve been reading…if not funnier.

Possible that corporation papers for Simcox’s “Minuteman Civil Defense Corps” were filed in a state other than Arizona.
A question, though…If it was organized to be a true non-profit, why wouldn’t you register it in your home state?”
